Molly Pitcher

Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley was Molly Pitcher's real name. Molly Pitcher was a Revolutionary War hero, a loyal wife, and a hard worker. Molly was born on October 13, 1754, her parents were German immigrants. She is one of the few women of the Revolutionary War that is called a Hero. In 1769 Molly became Dr. William Irvine's servant.

She left her job as being a servant and married John Casper Hays. He was a soldier in the Colonial artillery, he enlisted in 1775. Molly carried pitchers of water from a nearby creek to the soldiers during the terrible Battle of Monmouth. John collapsed while loading his cannon, Molly took over for him, which gained her much attention. John later died in 1789.

When John died Molly decided to marry George McCauley istead of staying widowed. They were not a happy couple, Molly was treated more as a servant than a wife. In 1822 Molly was awarded for being so kind by the legislator of Pennslyvania. Molly died on January 22, 1832.
